Alex Quach

BLabMed(Hons), PhD

Medical Scientist – Immunology, SA Pathology
Affiliate Senior Lecturer – University of Adelaide

Dr Alex Quach began his career in Immunopathology in 2004 as an Honours student in Laboratory Medicine at the University of South Australia, undertaking a research project at the Women's and Children's Hospital that focused on the diagnosis of X-linked Chronic Granulomatous Disease (XL-CGD) and the characterisation of the inborn error of immunity (IEI) within a single family. This early experience laid the foundation for a specialised career in Immunopathology, with a particular focus on IEIs, including their genetic, molecular, and functional diagnosis.

He went on to complete a PhD investigating Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID), further consolidating his expertise in the field. Currently, he oversees both the molecular genetics and diagnostic paediatric immunopathology services within the SA Pathology Immunology Directorate.

His technical experience spans a wide range of laboratory methodologies, including DNA/RNA-based assays, flow cytometry, Western blotting, immunoassays, cell culture, and functional cellular assays. He is actively involved in academic supervision, co-supervising laboratory placement, Honours, Masters, and PhD students, and holds a title as Affiliate Senior Lecturer at the University of Adelaide.

As of February 2025, he has authored 20+ original peer-reviewed publications. He is currently undertaking the Fellowship of the Faculty of Science (FFSc) through the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA). Through this program and personal endeavour, he has broadened his diagnostic scope across immunopathology and developed an active research interest in molecular modelling of pathogenic protein variants to support mechanistic insights into immune disorders.
